Remove cPanel users’ backups

cPanel users can generate backups of their accounts. Such backups are kept in the root of users’ directories, like /home/username/backup.tar.gz.

The filename format of the backups is backup-date_time_username.tar.gz. Example: backup-6.11.2017_09-52-35_plothost.tar.gz
The issue is that these backups take disk space and at some point you may see that your server is low on disk space. So, it’s a good idea to remove these backups from time to time.

You may want to inform your clients that you are removing backups (older than 5days etc.)

To remove backups for a single account, just navigate to the user’s directory and remove them with the command:

rm /home/username/backup-*.tar.gz

Usage example:

root@web [/]#
root@web [/]# cd home/plothost
root@web [/home/plothost]# ls backup-*.tar.gz
backup-6.11.2017_09-52-31_plothost.tar.gz backup-6.11.2017_09-52-35_plothost.tar.gz
root@web [/home/plothost]# rm /home/plothost/backup-*.tar.gz
rm: remove regular file '/home/plothost/backup-6.11.2017_09-52-31_plothost.tar.gz'? y
rm: remove regular file '/home/plothost/backup-6.11.2017_09-52-35_plothost.tar.gz'? y
root@web [/home/plothost]#

To find and list all the backups from users’ directories:

find /home/* -maxdepth 1 -type f -name 'backup-*.tar.gz'

To find and delete all the backups from users’ directories:

find /home/* -maxdepth 1 -type f -name 'backup-*.tar.gz' -delete

To find and list all the backups from users’ directories which are older than 5 days:

find /home/* -maxdepth 1 -type f -mtime +5 -name 'backup-*.tar.gz'

To find and delete all the backups from users’ directories which are older than 5 days:

find /home/* -maxdepth 1 -type f -mtime +5 -name 'backup-*.tar.gz' -delete

You can create a con job for this task.
1.Enter the cron job editor:

crontab -e

2. Add the cron job (this job will run every day at 04:00 and will delete all backup archives older than 5 days)

* 4 * * * find /home/* -maxdepth 1 -type f -mtime +5 -name 'backup-*.tar.gz' -delete

3. Exit (with saving the changes) the cron job editor.

4. Check if the cron job was added successfully with the command (it will list all cron jobs):

crontab -l

How to run cPanel accounts backup from SSH

It’s always a good idea to make on-site/off-site backups of your cPanel accounts. WHM will automatically make backups as per settings from WHM->Backup->Backup Configuration. But you can also run the backup process from the command line.

To start the backup, run:

/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup

and to force it, run:

/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup --force

Notice that if backups are not enabled in WHM you can’t start the backup process with the first command:

root@web [~]# /usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup
[2017-05-30 13:13:11 -0400] info [backup] Started at Tue May 30 13:13:11 2017
[2017-05-30 13:13:11 -0400] info [backup] Backups are not scheduled to run today. This can be adjusted in WHM => Backup => Backup Configuration or by calling bin/backup with the --force argument.

You will need to use the –force argument:

root@web [~]# /usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup --force
[2017-05-30 13:15:21 -0400] info [backup] Started at Tue May 30 13:15:21 2017
[2017-05-30 13:15:22 -0400] info [backup] The backup is now running in the background in process 16608.
[2017-05-30 13:15:22 -0400] info [backup] The backup process’s log file is "/usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup/1496164521.log".
Don’t forget to select the users for which you will run the backup. Select them in WHM->Backup->Backup User Selection

For some time you can also use the old backup (legacy) system. Notice that it will be removed in the next cPanel versions – probably in v66. To start the old backup process:

/scripts/cpbackup

and to force the legacy backup to start, use:

/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/cpbackup --force
You will use the –force parameter if the backup is up to date but you still want to run it for any reason.

How to restore cPanel accounts in WHM

In this article we will discuss how to restore a full backup/cpmove file in WHM(Web Host Manager).  Full cPanel backups can be generated by the backup system at scheduled intervals, by running a shell command or by the end user in cPanel.

WHM Restore Full Backups WHM Restore Full Backups

To restore a full cPanel backup or cpmove file follow the steps:

  1. Log into your WHM account (yourdomainname.com:2087)
  2. Navigate to Backup -> Restore a Full Backup/cpmove FIle.
  3. Select the Options you want to use on restoration:
Restricted Restore – for security, let this option checked

Restricted Restore performs additional security checks on the backup file. If a component of the backup file has a security issue, the system will not restore that portion of the backup.

Transfer Method: a. Restore with Username – if you have the backup file on the server. b. Restore with File – if you want to upload the archive from your computer
Overwrite the existing user. – if you want to overwrite the exiting account
Assign a Dedicated IP Address – if you want to assign an IP for the account (you must have free IPs on the server)

  4. Click the Restore button.  You will see the restoration process and any warnings/errors at the end. You can also use the Pause Queue and Abort buttons, if you want to pause or abort the process.

The cPanel backups/cpmove files must be in one of the directories:

/home, /home2, /home3, /root, /usr, /usr/home, /web

and must have one of the following file names:

cpmove-{user}
cpmove-{user}.tar
cpmove-{user}.tar.gz
{user}.tar
{user}.tar.gz
backup-{backup-date_time}_{user}.tar
backup-{backup-date_time}_{user}.tar.gz

How to backup/restore a single cPanel account via SSH

cPanel allows you to backup and restore cPanel accounts with shell commands. We will show in this post the commands you need to use.

To backup a single cPanel account:

  1. Login on your server as root via SSH
  2. Run the command :
    /scripts/pkgacct user
  3. By default, the backup file (cpmove-user.tar.gz) will be created in the /home directory.

To restore a single cPanel account backup/cpmove file:

  1. Login on your server as root via SSH
  2. Run the command :
    /scripts/restorepkg user

    or

    /scripts/restorepkg path-to-backup-fle
  3. To run the command with the user value, you must be in the same directory with the archive file.

You can also use the WHM interface to restore backups. Check our KB article: How to restore cPanel accounts in WHM

For more details about the pkgacct and restorepkg scripts use:

/scripts/pkgacct --help

and

/scripts/restorepkg --help
